So there have been quite a few times that I have reached this point, where I start typing in my wordpress dashboard.. yet I then go off and do something and days pass and I start over. So I am going to make this short so I actually post something!
I’ve noticed that I seem to want to write deep personal topics but if nothings going on really, I don’t feel the passion or drive to write. I’m not sure if it’s writers block or what.. so to you more seasoned bloggers, I ask you.. especially the ones that can crank out a blog or two a day… How do you do it? Do you have a notebook with ideas for blogs? Does something just jump into your head and you start to write?
Any tips would be appreciated..
I do keep a list of blog ideas in a notepad file on my desktop, I also use Google Calendar all the time to keep all of my appointments/kid stuff organized, so I have a blog calendar set up there too. It makes it really easy to drag/drop my blog ideas to different days, to keep track of what I’m doing and when. I hope that helps! ๐
I’m kind of like you. I have to be really motivated or passionate to want to write about it. I use writing prompts – like today I did Monday Listicles, where I wrote 10 things I learned in 2012. Then I also free write. I just write whatever comes to mind and usually that will lead me toward something I want to write about. But, I don’t write every day. I typically do 3-4 times per week. I don’t know how the others do it.
Bob, I only do one or two a week. I’m not a “daily event” type of blogger. More of a humorist that has to find something to be sarcastic about. My inspiration comes from the news as well as personal experiences. Many do keep memo pads, and some just have brains like sponges. Sorry this doesn’t help much, but I was here so thought I’d go ahead and comment. Good luck!
totally identify… (my ‘first blog Post’ story includes the fact that when I finally hit ‘PUBLISH’ I turned the computer off, got up and left the house…lol)
My own experience (only started a few years ago) has been it is better to write a Post that you are barely happy with and publish it than you are to wait until you have what you know is a great Post… if for no other reason than if you write and publish a bad Post then you better hurry up and write some more so you can ‘bury’ the bad one in the archives! lol
That’s a great question Bob…I only post 3 times a week. That was a goal that I set for myself because I truly didn’t think I could write more than that. I took a blogging class this past summer and the teacher recommended drawing up a monthly editorial calendar. He also suggested using themes – Monday might be a top 10 list, Tuesday might be a quote and so on…I’ve found that I don’t plan that far ahead. I try to plan the week out and also try to write ahead, meaning I have (in theory) next week’s posts already written. I know what you mean about writing on personal topics. I tend to be the same way, which makes it difficult, because I don’t always want to “put myself out there.” Anyway, I bet others in this group will have great suggestions for you, especially those that write 7 days a week. I have no idea how they do it!!
For me – I just sit down and right it. Some days are harder than others, but I watch for little inspirations throughout the day and I really dive in deep about what is on my mind. Granted – I have got three kids and a husband, so something is always happening around here that is blogworthy. And if it’s not – then I try to do something short. ๐
I started blogging on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I’ve found that I can handle three times per week. I blog exclusively about married life, but you can really do it however you want. I find that it helps to have a structure, though. Pick topics that you are passionate about, and find related things to post about that topic on certain days of the week. For example, if you love eating out, theater/movies, and wine, your weekly posts could be the following every week:
Monday – Post about the restaurant where you dined the previous weekend
Wednesday – Post about the local play, movie review or do a character spotlight
Friday – Write about the flavors of the wine, consistency and suggest a food pairing.
I hope this was helpful. Happy blogging!
I am not a blogger (yet? maybe?), but Stacy probably has the best advice. However, if you are having trouble finding things to write about, ask yourself a question. For example, think about your favorite baseball team or your favorite Nascar driver. Why are they your favorite? Why not another team or driver? Or, if you were the first person to step foot on Mars, what would you say?
There are also other blogs that exist specifically to give ideas for bloggers to blog about. The Daily Post is one, here on wordpress. Something like that might help give you ideas.
Sorry–I write poetry so I don’t count–meaning, I don’t post everyday–I know that isn’t really helpful, but most poetry blogs don’t post everyday–write something meaningful to you—I think that is the way to go
